CLARA BUINING - BRUINS (1859-1922): The reading girl

"The reading girl" illustrates Ars Decora's philosophy of bringing forgotten paintings with a decorative dimension to the attention of an art-loving audience. In this canvas, Clara Bruins manages to evoke the atmosphere of a late nineteenth-century interior, with opulent draperies, portraits on display and a fashionable palm, and thus ranks alongside contemporary Hague School artists like Breitner. A canvas that provides peace of mind.

JOHAN HEINRICH NEUMAN (1819-1898): Portrait of a girl

An endearing and characterful portrait painted by one of the great Dutch portrait painters of the nineteenth century. The refinement with which Neuman has depicted the features of the face and in particular the hairline shows his great skill as a portraitist. In its oval frame, the painting is a decorative presence without being sweet.

FRIEDRICH (FRITZ) MARTIN (1859-1932): Faust meets Gretchen in front of the church

With this beautiful classic canvas by the German painter Friedrich (Fritz) Martin, Ars Decora offers a fascinating narrative work with great decorative power. The confrontation of figures in a historical setting and the powerful use of color by Martin create an atmosphere of great drama and yes, that’s what it is: an episode from Goethe’s Faust play.

OVERDOOR PAINTING (dessus-de-porte), pastoral scene at a fountain

This romantic overdoor painting probably belonged to an ensemble of painted wall hangings and a chimney piece. The arcadic tableau refers to paintings of the Golden Age of Aelbert Cuyp or Nicolaes Berchem.

WILLEM ADRIANUS FABRI (1853-1925): Overdoor painting

This beautiful overdoor painting by Willem Adrianus Fabri (1853-1925) was probably situated above a double panel door (porte-brisée) of a monumental house. Willem Fabri was one of the most important decorative painters of interiors in the Netherlands, whose work has been preserved in many palaces (‘t Loo, Soestdijk, Noordeinde, Lange Voorhout).

A COUPLE AT A TABLE. Eros in the Dutch Golden Age

Parts of this 17th century panel are worn, some parts have been restored, but its impression is still fresh and a pleasure to look at. Especially when you notice the erotic allusions spread across the painting.

LOUIS GEORGES BRILLOUIN (1817-1893): A group of smokers

Georges Brillouin was specialized in painting everyday scenes. We see here a company of smoking gentlemen in an eighteenth-century, castle-like entourage. The strikingly brilliant colours with which Brillouin has painted the clothing give the painting a fresh and cheerful look.

WILLEM ADRIANUS FABRI (1853-1925): Overdoor painting

This beautiful overdoor painting by Willem Adrianus Fabri finds its provenance in the paneling of an unknown house. The scene with putto, blue-yellow macaw (Ara ararauna) and vase with flowers on a plinth is clearly inspired by a design by Daniël Marot. This authentic and dignified painting is of course very suitable when restoring a classical mansion back to its former glory, but we can also imagine a purpose as an eye-cather in a modern interior of a reception room or hotel/restaurant.

OVERDOOR PAINTING (dessus-de-porte): sleeping putti / bacchants

Painting and decoration come together in this charming brunaille of two putti, surrounded by bunches of grapes. Originally, this painting was placed above a fireplace (a so called dessus-de-cheminée) or incorporated in a nineteenth-century paneling. But it also comes into its own as a separate element in a modern interior.

G.T. AMBROSIO: copies of Pompeian frescoes, around 1900

These eight very fine Pompeian paintings would be a great embellishment to a long corridor, or a classic library. Being copies of frescoes of the famous House of the Vettii, exhumed firstly in 1896, they were probably created around 1900 as a fancy souvenir of Pompeii.

PIERRE JEAN VAN DER OUDERAA (1841-1915): Portal of St. Mark’s Basilica (A lady who leaves the San Marco gives alms)

Anyone who has visited Venice or knows it well will be drawn towards this atmospheric canvas of the northern portal of the Basilica of St. Mark. The eye is drawn into the portal by the powerful perspective created by the richly decorated arches and the different groups of people.

OVERDOOR PAINTING (dessus-de-porte), “Venus and Adonis”

A rare overdoor painting, from the final era of decorative painting in domestic interiors (around 1920). It used to be integrated in panelling, which is why a frame is missing.

Copy of PETER PAUL RUBENS en FRANS SNYDERS: Christ and John the Baptist as children with two angels

If only for its huge size, this cheerful and colorful overdoor is a great eyecatcher in a modern interior. More copies of this painting are known, but this copyist was a master in his skill. This piece proves how a good copy of an ancient painting can get a whole new significance as an autonomous artwork in the present day.

JOSEPH MIDDELEER (1865-1934): Beguinage (Bruges)

Pay attention to the dimensions of this impressive painting by Joseph Middeleer. If you can provide in the space on the wall this painting requires, you are able to create a convincing resting point in your interior. The daring bright greens in the grass, the blue glow on the roof tiles and the violet colored clouds, draw you into the painting like in a dream. The key of the master is literally tangible in the pasty paint.
